Why pre-training fuel matters

Going into training under-fuelled can make a solid session feel harder than it should. Energy, concentration and decision-making often drop well before motivation does.

A good pre-training plan does not need to be perfect. It simply needs to give you enough available energy to match the demands of the session.

What to prioritise

For most moderate to hard sessions, carbohydrate is the main nutrient to focus on before training. It helps top up available fuel so repeated efforts, gym sessions and field-based training feel more sustainable.

  • Aim for a balanced meal two to three hours before training when time allows.
  • Use a lighter carbohydrate-based snack 30 to 60 minutes before if the gap between meals is long.
  • Keep foods familiar before harder sessions to reduce the chance of gut discomfort.

Simple practical ideas

Your best option depends on training time, appetite and what you tolerate well. The goal is to keep it realistic enough that you can repeat it.

  • Two to three hours before: rice, pasta, wraps or toast with a lean protein source and fluids.
  • One hour before: fruit, yoghurt, cereal, a muesli bar or toast.
  • Early morning: something small is often better than nothing, even if it is just fruit and a drink.
